Sudanese Lawyer Honoured by European Parliament |

Sudanese lawyer, Salih Mahmoud Osman has won the European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom on Thought for 2007.
He will be formally presented with the award next Tuesday in Strasbourg by the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pottering. The annual award is presented on or around 10 December, the day on which the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to reward outstanding achievements in the “fight to protect freedom of thought and expression against intolerance, fanaticism and hatred”.
Salih works with the Sudan Organisation Against Torture (SOAT), which provides legal assitance and other aid to victims of human rights abuses in Sudan. His recent work in Darfur cataloguing alleged war crimes in the region has been turned over to the International Criminal Court to assist in prosecutions. He has also worked for over twenty years providing free legal representation to people who have been detained, tortured or abused in Sudan’s various civil wars.
Salih is currently a member of the Sudanese National Parliament. He was imprisoned for over seven months in 2004 with a charge or a trial. He has been honoured previously by Human Rights Watch in 2005 for his work in Sudan.
Announcing the award, Mr Pöttering said "in the face of violence and arbitrary power, Salih Mahmoud Osman stands up for dialogue and justice. And there can be no democracy without justice. By granting the Sakharov Prize to Salih Mahmoud Osman, the European Parliament shows its support for the action of this courageous man who has become the voice of Darfur, and through him, for the establishment of the rule of law in Sudan."
