Scottish fisheries win funding boost Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 November 2007

The Scottish fishing and fish-farming industry can look forward to £38.83m in funding from a new European grants scheme aimed at helping the industry modernise and become more sustainable.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead said the settlement – which represents 40 per cent of the UK’s share of scheme – demonstrates the importance of Scottish fisheries to both the UK and Europe.

“I am delighted that we have negotiated hard to achieve the lion's share of the UK's allocation of the European Fisheries Funds.  This will provide Scotland's vital fishing and fish farming communities with almost £39m of grant support.

“This money will be used to modernise and secure the sustainability of their businesses over the next six years.  The significance of Scotland's fisheries and food industries, in both UK and European terms, is rightly recognised in this settlement.”
