War veterans get healthcare boost Print E-mail

Armed services personnel who have developed health problems as a result of their service will now get priority NHS treatment for those conditions even if they do not receive a war pension.

The current regulations state that veterans may only receive priority treatment if they are actually receiving a war pension.

The measure is being rolled out across the UK, but Cabinet Secretary for Health Nicola Sturgeon said the measure would address some particular concerns about the treatment of veterans by the NHS in Scotland.

Sturgeon said:

“Our service men and women do an outstanding job and it is only right that those who have health problems as result of serving their country in the armed forces should get priority access to treatment. The Scottish Government fully supports these new measures and plans to implement these in a way that the benefits are fully realised.”

Individual clinicians will judge the allocation of priority treatment cases.
