Digital Gaelic TV channel must attract new speakers |

The Scottish Conservatives have warned that a proposed new digital Gaelic TV channel must attract new speakers and not just provide an enhanced service to existing speakers if it is to justify its existence.
Tory culture spokesman Ted Brocklebank made the comments after the publications of a Public Value Assessment from the BBC Trust Unit and an Ofcom market assessment into the proposed channel yesterday.
Brocklebank said:
“I welcome the Public Value Assessment from the BBC Trust Unit and note that while the proposed Gaelic Digital Service will be of good quality and will provide an enhanced service to existing Gaelic speakers, it does not believe that the additional expenditure will be justified if all the service achieves is better coverage for the existing audience. However, Ofcom in a separate market impact assessment also published today, concludes that the proposed new channel will have a significant positive market impact, most notably for the Gaelic media sector.
“Scottish Conservatives believe in the principle of a dedicated Gaelic Digital Service, but share the BBC Trust's concern that what is required is a demonstration of value for money from the BBC in offering wider value to the audience in Scotland. The new channel would not be fulfilling its potential if all it did was offer an enhanced service to existing Gaelic speakers. We strongly support the BBC Trust's view that the proposed new channel should also attract new speakers to the Gaelic language and look forward to assurances from BBC Scotland that the channel will also address this aim.”
