Union plea to MSPs for asbestos help Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 November 2007

The Scottish Trades Union Congress will today meet with MSPs in order to try and amend Scottish legislation in order to give pleural plaque sufferers compensation denied by the House of Lords.

Pleural plaques form after exposure to asbestos, and the STUC says the recent House of Lords decision to deny compensation to those suffering from exposure is unfair.

“The ludicrous decision taken by the House of Lords which states that asbestos victims who develop the lung condition pleural plaques are not entitled cannot claim compensation needs to be addressed. We believe that the Scottish Parliament can act and welcome the proposed Bill being put forward by Clydeside Action and Frank Maguire from Thompsons Solicitors. The Scottish Parliament has a proud record of securing cross-party support for previous asbestos injustices and this unfortunately, is the latest of many.

“The STUC will also be meeting with Kenny MacAskill later today to discuss a number of issues and we will be asking if the Scottish Government plans to support this Bill. This would ensure that the Bill could be progressed as quickly as possible and rectify the perverse decision of the House of Lords”.
