Scotland urged to build on architectural success Print E-mail

Architecture has a critical role in creating wealth for Scotland, according to Culture Minister Linda Fabiani.

Fabiani said architectural success could help achieve many of the Scottish Government’s objectives. “It contributes to a 'wealthier Scotland' by attracting business investment and tourism through our best new architecture and rich heritage, and that same smart design and rich architectural heritage enhances all our lives,” she said.

"This government will build on the strengths of past architecture policy as we now focus on promoting a positive view of our architectural culture and heritage and building a sustainable and inclusive approach to our built environment."

Fabiani is to address the UK Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities this morning before announcing the winner of the 2007 RIAS Doolan award for the Best Building in Scotland tonight.

She said the strength of the projects shortlisted boded well for the future of architecture in Scotland.

"For a small country, we have a history of punching above our weight - having produced architects like Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Robert Adam and wonderful buildings and places such as Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh's New Town,” she said.
