SNP claim victory in misconduct row Print E-mail
Tuesday, 30 October 2007

The SNP has claimed victory in a row over accusations it misused the civil service in developing economic figures used at this weekend’s national party conference, a notion rebuffed by civil servants themselves.

Labour and the Tories both claimed the SNP had broken the Ministerial code of conduct by using civil service resources to produce figures showing that an independent Scotland would be the third richest country in the EU.

Chief Whip Brian Adam said:

“Yet again Labour have scored an own goal. They have not even challenged the substance of the figures, so it is safe to assume that even they accept they are true. Their misplaced challenge was another example of an obsession with process rather than substance. It actually keeps attention focussed exactly where it should be – on the potential for Scotland to be a 'Celtic Lion' economy.

“These dramatic figures show the potential for Scotland to thrive as an independent nation. Scotland is in the top three wealthiest nations in the EU when all our resources are included, which makes the paltry spending increase imposed by the UK Government all the more indefensible.”
