The convener of the Glasgow licensing board has warned licensed premises that the prices charged for alcohol must be the same through the day, following allegations that some premises have been seeking to make additional profit during high profile football games, such as the recent Scotland World Cup Qualifiers, by temporarily increasing their prices above what is advertised on their price lists.

Bailie Jim McNally said that while the policy of consistent pricing had been introduced to prevent licensed premises from temporarily lowering their prices in happy hours as an act as an inducement for people to consume more alcohol, the policy also prevents the temporary increase of prices.

Speaking before the Scotland’s last qualifier against Italy on 17 November, which could see the team qualify for the European Championships next year, McNally said: “In all cases, the price at which alcohol is being sold must be the same throughout the entire day and be the same as that shown on the price list which must be prominently displayed at or near the bar.

“We don’t intend to “name names” at this stage but I am quite sure that the licensed premises in question know we are talking about them. If any further breaches of the Board’s Policy in this regard are brought to the Board’s attention then appropriate action may be taken.”
