Cash for honours investigation praise Print E-mail

SNP MP Angus MacNeil has praised the conduct of Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates and his team for their work investigating the cash-for-honours claims.

MacNeil made the comments after Yates and members of his team gave evidence on the allegations to the Public Administration Committee.

“It is a peculiar experience to watch a committee that had itself asserted that certain activities had gone on, yet seemed displeased by the investigation into these very concerns.  While asserting that the trading of honours goes on in covert ways, we still have an unchanged system which Westminster observers point out will not change until we have state funding of political parties. Meanwhile, a fiction is maintained that there is no link between cash and peerages.

“I am glad that I brought this matter to police attention and still hope that the situation, which would embarrass any normal democracy, will soon be corrected. Finally, I would like to comment on the dignity with which John Yates conducted himself. I have always been happy with the conduct of Yates and his team and fervently believe that they were watertight and never leaked anything.  If any politician claims journalists have told them otherwise then they should name the journalists involved. John Yates' team, after their hard work over the past 17 months, should not be left with any political mud thrown in their direction.”

John Yates can hold his head up high over this sordid investigation.
He should be allowed to carry out further investigations without let or hindrance from politicians who consider themselves above the law!
