Funding announced for Gaelic Language Plans Print E-mail
Friday, 19 October 2007

Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the Scottish Government’s Gaelic development agency has announced nearly one million pounds of funding for public bodies developing Gaelic Language Plans.

Under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act the Bòrd has statutory powers to ask public bodies to prepare plans to make their services available in Gaelic.

The first six organisations chosen to do so are the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Government, Argyll and Bute Council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, The Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. However, other bodies are also scheduled to produce plans in the coming years and are making preparations now.

The funding from the Gaelic Language Act Implementation Fund will go to help bodies provide a range of functions in Gaelic; everything from language learning for staff to translation services.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig chief executive Kenneth Murray said this was another large step forward in opening up opportunities for more people to use Gaelic.

“These public bodies have enthusiastically embraced the preparation of Gaelic Language Plans. Some of the bodies awarded funding are not due to produce their plans for a couple of years but this funding will help them do this.

“It is hugely encouraging to see the range and depth of projects planned to promote Gaelic and to make these organisations’ services available in Gaelic to those who wish to use the language while accessing them.

“This is an exciting time for Gaelic. Progress is being made in developing and sustaining its use for future generations and we are pleased to give help and encouragement to ensure that Gaelic plays an increasingly prominent part in public life.”

A second, smaller round of bids for this year’s fund is now open.
