Lords committee to look at EU budget Print E-mail

Britain’s rebate and the value for money achieved by EU spending will be up for debate when the House of Lords European Union Committee looks into the European Commission’s 2008/09 budget review. 

The European Budget Review was agreed in 2006 and will see the European Parliament, Council and Commission undertaking a wholesale review of all aspect of EU spending, including contentious areas like the British rebate and the Common Agricultural policy.

Baroness Cohen of Pimlico, who will conduct the inquiry said:

“The Commission is in evidence gathering mode and we will be undertaking our duty to scrutinise European documents on behalf of the House. This is an opportunity - the first since the current financial perspective was agreed during the British Presidency in 2005 - for the public to tell us what they think of the EU Budget.”
