Scottish companies should be showcasing quality Scottish produce on the world stage, Minister for Environment Michael Russell said today.
Speaking following his visit to the world’s largest food fair, ANUGA in Cologne, Russell said that he would like to see more Scottish companies “flying the flag for Scotland”.
He said: "I was very impressed by the Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) stand at the ANUGA food fair and what really struck me was the intense global competition Scotland faces in the food and, in particular, meat industry. We can compete in the world market thanks to the quality and reputation of our produce and the Scottish Government is committed to helping support our food industry in whatever way we can to promote this vital sector.
"Now the meat export markets have resumed, albeit subject to strict conditions, we can look forward to the future and providing a continuity of supply for our loyal customers. I would like to see more Scottish companies at ANUGA and similar events in future to fly the flag for Scotland by showcasing quality Scottish produce on the world stage."
His visit to the food fair, during which he met Scottish meat representatives including QMS, follows the lifting of meat export restrictions this weekend. Ahead of his visit Russell said it is crucial that the Scottish meat industry takes the opportunity to engage with buyers on the continent, to help get exports back on “the road to recovery.”
He said: "Scottish food is ranked amongst the best in the world and I am proud to be able to support our meat at this vital time for the industry. Following the recent challenges of foot and mouth disease in Surrey, the lifting of meat export restrictions will prove imperative at this crucial time of year. However there is still a long way to go for our farmers.
"Our food industry is vital to both the rural and whole economy of Scotland and the Scottish Government is committed to supporting the supply chain from farm to fork. We are working closely with Scottish producers, processors, suppliers, retailers and consumers towards the development of a food policy for Scotland.
"However it is crucial that our industry take the opportunities presented to them at ANUGA to engage with buyers on the continent, to help get exports back on the road to recovery and I am delighted to see so many of them here doing just that."
