The first in a series of key meetings ahead of European talks on fisheries is taking place today in Peterhead, with Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead chairing the annual Fisheries Negotiations Stakeholder Event for the first time.
Lochhead will listen to industry concerns in the run-up to the December Fisheries Council at the meeting is being held from 1430 hours to 1630 hours in the Arbuthnott Hall, Peterhead.
He said: “This is the first of several events which will be taking place across Scotland in the run up to the December Fisheries Council.
“It's also very fitting that the event is being held in Europe's largest whitefish port and where last week I hosted the historic first meeting in Scotland of all four UK Fisheries Ministers.
“We are again entering a crucial period for a vital Scottish industry and decisions need to be made.
“The Scottish Government promised at the outset a fresh start and fresh ideas for Scotland's fisheries.
"With nearly a third of Europe's waters, and the lion's share of the UK's fishing interests, Scotland deserves a louder voice in Europe. This Government is making that demand a priority.
"I have submitted a 20-point plan to Defra which not only calls for a greater role for the Scottish Government in negotiations, but also greater participation all round.
"We need more direct involvement of our fishermen and our fishing communities to prepare for the forthcoming talks and a separation between the English position and the UK position.
"Last week's talks between all four UK Ministers in Peterhead were a very useful starting point. The discussions were friendly and frank and I hope this will set the tone for constructive working in the future - and a stronger voice for Scottish interests."
