Holyrood magazine editor Mandy Rhodes has been nominated for Political Journalist of the Year at the annual Scottish Press Awards, to take place in April.

Other contenders are Eddie Barnes of Scotland on Sunday, Campbell Gunn of the Sunday Post, Paul Hutcheon of the Sunday Herald and Stuart Nicolson of the Scottish Daily Mail.

The awards, held by the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society, are in their 28th year. Charles Wilson, chair of the judging panel, said: "Competition in the Scottish newspaper market, always the strongest in the UK, has become even more intense in recent times because of the increase in resources being spent by London-based groups on their Scottish editions."

"Journalistic quality thrives on such competition and this is richly reflected in this year's near record entry for the Scottish Press Awards"

The event, to be hosted by Lorraine Kelly, has the support of a number of high profile sponsors, including Bord Na Gaidhlig, Clydesdale Bank, Event Consultants Scotland, Highland Spring, MCL, Radisson SAS Hotel Glasgow, Redpath, Royal Mail, Scottish & Newcastle, Standard Life, Standard Life, The Business, VisitScotland and Whyte & Mackay.
