Gordon Brown was facing a mounting crisis of confidence after he was forced to scrap his plans for an autumn general election, prompting damaging claims that he had "lost his nerve".

Alex Salmond is to launch a fierce attack on the UK Treasury this week , claiming it is handing Scotland a "lousy" amount of cash and accusing ministers of deliberately cooking the books to make it look bigger. 

Road tolls will be blocked north of the Border by ministers refusing to pass the legislation needed to make them work in Scotland, Government insiders revealed.

Liberal Democrats this weekend backed a call for the Scottish Parliament to have more powers. 

Taxpayers are paying an extra £500 per month to house an MSP in a hotel in Edinburgh because she has been barred from staying in her own flat in the city.
