The most remote parts of Scotland are to be given broadband access for the first time under a scheme announced today by the Scottish Government. An open procurement process, worth up to £3.5m, has now started to find a suitable provider, or providers, for the service. Although 99 per cent of Scotland is currently able to access broadband technology, some rural areas are too far away from ADSL-enabled telephone exchanges to get connected. Announcing the procurement process, Enterprise Minister Jim Mather said “as many individuals and businesses as possible” should have broadband access. “In this 21st century, broadband is an increasingly vital tool for business and is now used by more and more households as a standard utility,” he said. “By extending the availability of affordable broadband, we can help create a wealthier and fairer Scotland.” Anyone with access problems has been urged to inform the Scottish Government by the end of 2007 to enable connectivity work to begin in 2008. |
