Consultation on freshwater fisheries launched Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 September 2007

Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead today launched a consultation on a new Strategic Framework for Scottish Freshwater Fisheries.

Lochhead said that he was grateful to the Freshwater Fisheries Forum for producing the consultation paper. The Forum was set up jointly by the Scottish Government and key stakeholders from the salmon and freshwater fisheries sector.

“To manage and develop the salmon and freshwater fisheries sector in Scotland, in a sustainable manner, is important to all of Scotland and in particular to our rural communities,” said Lochhead.

"We are not promoting a prescriptive approach to fisheries management but are looking to establish priorities for action to allow management structured to individual circumstances to evolve.”

Lochhead added that while he recognised that the approach was aspirational, “without ambition we will not remain one of the world's premier fishing destinations while maintaining a vibrant domestic fishery”.

The Freshwater Fisheries Forum provides a public arena in which attendees can be kept up to date with developments and express their own views. The next Forum is scheduled to take place at Hampden Park, Glasgow on 28 November, at which the framework will be the main discussion topic.

The Scottish Government is seeking responses to the consultation by 4 January 2008.

1.I agree some changes are needed to ensure the long term health of Scotland's freshwater fisheries, but that these changes should based on good evidence for appropriate change.
2. I agree that further potential stakeholders are consulted and in particular Community Trusts
3 No I'm doubtful that my specific interest was well represented by the current stakeholders
