The Greens have announced their new leadership team, with Green Edinburgh City Councillor Alison Johnstone taking over as the female co-convener. Lothians list MSP Robin Harper remains the male co-convener.
Johnstone replaces former MSP Shiona Baird, who lost her North East list seat at the May elections. Green party rules dictate that the party must have a male and female co-convener.
Johnstone said:
“I will be delighted to take on the role of female Co-convenor. I am a great admirer of the work of Shiona Baird and have a great role model to provide guidance and inspiration. I intend to make sure people realise just how far the other parties fall
short in their commitments to environmental and social justice.
“Eleven years ago, faced with the loss of my local, beloved parkland to a luxury housing developer in return for not a lot, I said to myself 'I have to do something'. This led to my long involvement in grass roots, local campaigning. My own road to politics did not stem from any desire to be involved in politics, but from a belief that the system was wrong and had to be changed.”
Harper said he looked forward to working with Johnstone:
“I am delighted at the prospect of working with Alison Johnstone as Co-convener and I'm sure that we will make a strong team in flying the flag for the party.”
