Disability Agenda Scotland will call for equality for disabled people
in their manifesto, which is to be launched at the Scottish Parliament
today.
The manifesto, titled Great Expectations: A disability manifesto for Scotland’s elections 2007 makes
demands ranging from ensuring that disabled people's communication and
other support needs are met at every level of health consultation, to
appropriate, realistic employment opportunities for disabled people.
The manifesto launch will
include a speech from Labour MSP Jackie Baillie, who is heavily
involved with disability politics, and testimonials
from disabled people about their wishes for the future.
Baillie, who chairs the Cross
Party Group on Learning Disability, said: “The Scottish Parliament has
already achieved a lot for disabled people. But there is more to do.
The parliament and local authorities must work in partnership with
disabled people to ensure that the progress that has been made is
continued. This manifesto will serve as an excellent starting point.“
Alan Dickson, convener of the
group, said: “All disabled people are really asking for is equality.
They want the same opportunities, and to be treated the same as
everybody else. Things like education, friendships, relationships and
employment, to live in and be part of their community and to enjoy good
health. It’s not a lot to ask.”
