A consultation on the Strategic
Environmental Assessment (SEA) for wave and tidal energy was announced
today by Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen.
The consultation,
which will assess the effects of deploying wave and tidal energy
devices around the Scottish coastline, will run for 12 weeks from
today.
In particular, it will consider
the results of the Environmental Report; how best to avoid, reduce or
offset environmental effects; issues associated with identifying sites
to locate projects; data and knowledge gaps; and monitoring the
environmental effects to inform both project development and the
strategy for marine energy.
Stephen said: "I am pleased that the SEA consultation for wave and tidal energy is now underway.
"We know Scotland has the
potential to be the marine energy powerhouse of Europe. That is why
earlier this year, I awarded over £13 million in grants to develop
marine energy technologies and get them operating in Scottish waters.
"I am determined that Scotland
becomes a leader in this emerging industry but it is vital that we
understand how these technologies interact with the environment.
"The SEA consultation will move
us forward, providing essential information to developers,
environmental organisations and local communities who are involved in
this industry.
"I urge all interested parties to respond to the consultation and put forward their views on its findings."
