High value shellfish boost Scottish catch Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 September 2007

Shellfish has become the most valuable part of the Scottish catch for the first time.

Scottish Government figures reveal that the value of shellfish landings increased by over a fifth to £140m between 2005 and 2006. Landings formed 16 per cent of the total by weight but 38 per cent by value.

The study shows some positive trends for fishing industry as a whole, with the total value of fish landed up by three per cent to £370m in 2006 and the number of fishermen up by 1 per cent to 5,205.

However, the number of active fishing vessels at the end of 2006 was down by 3 per cent on the year before, reflecting the impact of recent decommissioning schemes.
