Tuesday, 18 September 2007 |
Labour's new leader in the Scottish Parliament, Wendy Alexander, has announced the party's Shadow Cabinet, with a high proportion of female MSPs.
The only men on the Cabinet with shadow Cabinet Secretary briefs are Andy
Kerr, who will be shadow secretary for public services, and Iain Gray,
who will be shadow secretary for finance. Michael McMahon as
chief whip will also attend Cabinet meetings.
The key post of health and wellbeing is being taken by Margaret Curran,
Sarah Boyack is taking on environment, Rhona Brankin is covering
education and Pauline McNeill, the only member of the new Shadow
Cabinet without previous Ministerial experience, will take on the
justice portfolio.
Jackie Baillie has been made shadow minister for parliamentary business and constitutional issues.
Long-standing minister Malcolm Chisholm has been given the junior
portfolio for Europe, external affairs and culture.
Those who will not sit in the Cabinet, but who have substantial new
briefs, include former Glasgow City Council leader Charlie Gordon, who
takes on the transport brief, Dr Elaine Murray, who has been given the
enterprise brief, and John Park, who will look after the skills
portfolio.
Des McNulty will cover the environment brief, Karen Gillon rural development, and Lewis
Macdonald energy and tourism. Ken MacIntosh will continue to cover the
schools brief, Mary Mulligan will take on children and early years, and
Richard Baker will be spokesman for higher education and student
support.
Dr Richard Simpson has been given the public health brief, Johann
Lamont will continue with the communities portfolio and Paul Martin is
shadow minister for community safety. Frank McAveety will take on the
sports brief.
MSPs who have lost out on shadow ministerial briefs as a result of the
reshuffle include Cathy Jamieson, who will still have a party reform
role and sit in the shadow cabinet, Hugh Henry, who will settle for
convenership of the Audit Committee, and Patricia Ferguson - all three
are close allies of previous leader Jack McConnell.
Tom McCabe is Labour's nomination for the Scottish Parliament's
Corporate Body, whips are David Stewart and James Kelly, and David
Whitton will be Parliamentary aide to Wendy Alexander.
