Farming communities will be able to keep up to date with the latest developments in the foot and mouth outbreak by text message, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead announced today.
Subscribers to the new text message update service will receive test alerts with information updates, such as news on the relaxation of movement restrictions.
Announcing the service, Lochhead said: "This is an anxious time for many people and it is vitally important that they can access accurate information as quickly as possible.
"We are doing all we can to help our rural communities through the current difficulties.”
He said that the text service should prove particularly useful for busy farmers and other groups in the livestock industry whose work means they are often out and about.
He continued: "This way, they can get an early heads-up on changes will direct affect them and they can plan accordingly. I hope many folk will use it."
Those wishing to sign up for the new text alert service should text FMD to 07781 482146 (note that FMD has to be uppercase) to get started. Subscribers will incur a one off charge at their mobile network provider's standard text message rate to sign up to this service. There is no charge to receive FMD texts.
