Decision to allow imperial measures welcomed Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 September 2007

Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith today welcomed the decision of European Industry Commissioner Gunther Verheugen to allow imperial weights and measures to continue alongside metric.

The Commissioner today confirmed that he will take no action on the issue and that any future decisions on metric and imperial will be left entirely to the UK Government.

Smith said that the move showed that common sense could win the day.

"The scaremongering of Euro sceptics over the years that the EU would take away our pints was always overplayed and today's announcement from the Commission will hopefully put this issue to bed once and for all.

"I agree with Commissioner Verheugen that this battle has been pointless and I welcome his decision to bring it to an end.

"I learnt metric growing up but I understand many people prefer to use Imperial and should be allowed to continue to do so."

Just for a wee bit of clarity in all the metric misinformation that is flying around, this announcement changes little - pints were never under threat for draught beer nor cider, nor miles etc. on road signs.
This announcement relates purely to the use of 'supplementary' imperial information - metric units must still be used for all measurements connected with trade in the UK.
