Young people compete in Street Athletics final Print E-mail
Friday, 07 September 2007

The Scottish Street Athletics finals will take place in Dundee tomorrow and will be opened by Public Health Minister Shona Robison.

The event will see young Scots aged 11-20 divided into three age categories to compete over 60 metres for the top prize of a one-year sponsorship deal with Reebok.

Robison said the Street Athletics are a “fun and challenging” event, which give young people the opportunity to try athletics and encourage them to keep active.

She continued: "It's a pleasure to open the first Scottish Street Athletics National finals - participation in sport promotes good physical and mental health, increased social interaction, and improves general wellbeing.

"Young people make an important contribution to Scottish society. It's important we encourage them to take part in sport, which builds self-esteem and confidence, and can help them succeed in other areas of life."

Robison will also be joined in Dundee by the athletes Linford Christie, Darren Campbell and Liz McColgan.

Linford Christie said: "We've had a great reaction to the Street Athletics events across Scotland and it's shown that there are some really talented youngsters who have not yet been engaged by the Sport.

"Darren and I are looking forward to the Final in Dundee and hopefully bringing the programme back to Scotland next year."

Richard McCready , Dundee City Council's Leisure, Arts and Communities Convener added: "It is great to see an event like this taking place in the heart of the city. After Dundee's excellent regional heat, the city has the chance to put on another successful event through strong partnership working, allowing the participants to compete in an excellent location, showcasing their abilities.

"These events hopefully increase awareness of the sport, healthier lifestyles and the city's attractions."
