Conference to be held on Scotland’s smoking ban. Print E-mail
Friday, 07 September 2007

Smokefree, a conference looking at the effects of Scotland’s smoking ban introduced in March 2006, is to be held in Edinburgh on 10 and 11 September.

Speakers include director of public health science at NHS Scotland Dr Laurence Gruer and Chief Medical Officer Dr Harry Burns, who will look at a smokefree and healthy society.  Assistant Professor at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York Dr Andy Hyland will discuss the world-wide progress of developing smokefree legislation.  Professor Luke Clancy from the Institute for a Tobacco-free Society in Dublin will also attend.

The conference will present a programme of research highlighting the effect the ban has had on Scotland’s health, society and the quality of air. At the same time, the British Medical Journal will publish three of several research papers which have been written. The conference, organised by the Scottish Government and Health Scotland, will bring delegates from around the world to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
