The Scottish Government is committed to creating a sustainable future for Gaelic, the Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture Linda Fabiani has said as she met with the chair and new chief executive of Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

Speaking after the meeting with chair Matthew MacIver and Kenneth Murray, in his second day as the chief executive, Fabiani said: “The Scottish Government is determined to create a sustainable future for Gaelic in Scotland. Our programme for Gaelic will be ambitious and challenging.

“Bòrd na Gàidhlig has a key role in delivering our priorities for Gaelic in Scotland and today's meeting gave us an early opportunity to discuss these and cultivate essential close working relations.

“It is very important that Bòrd na Gàidhlig continues to make progress with the key projects in the National Plan for Gaelic which will take forward our priorities for Gaelic.

“I look forward to working positively with Bòrd na Gàidhlig and wish Kenneth Murray every success in his new role."

Murray said: “I was grateful for an early opportunity to meet the Minister and discuss the Scottish Government's priorities for Gaelic.

“The meeting was also an opportunity for the Bòrd to state its ambitions for the language and culture and how it aims to achieve those.

“This was a hugely useful and constructive discussion and I am certain that the Minister is committed to helping grow and develop Gaelic. We are keen to build on the positive relationship we established today.

“I look forward to working with her on behalf of Gaelic and also welcoming her to the Bòrd's offices in Inverness in the near future.”
