SNP welcomes parliament talks Print E-mail
Monday, 27 August 2007

The Scottish National Party has welcomed reports over the weekend that the three unionist parties are moving towards an alliance on extra powers for the Scottish Parliament.

Commenting on speculation that Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats will this week discuss an overhaul of powers for the parliament, including new taxes on inheritance, property and vehicles, an SNP spokesperson said the party was "delighted".

"This development comes in the wake of the Scottish Government's National Conversation on Scotland 's constitutional future, which is moving forward the entire process," he said.

"The National Conversation train has left the station – it's a matter for the other parties which compartment they want to get on."

The Scottish Parliament currently has the right to vary the basic rate of income tax by up to 3p. However, this power has never been used.
