Tories claim St Andrew’s Day credit |

The Scottish Conservatives have taken credit for the SNP’s decision to substitute the proposed St Andrew’s Day holiday for another day, rather than add an entirely new public holiday.
Deputy leader Murdo Fraser said he was glad the SNP had adopted the Tory position on the long-running issue.
“In the last Parliamentary session it was the then First Minister and Dennis Canavan who ended up compromising their differences by backing the position long since advocated by the Scottish Conservatives. Back in June 2006, the consultants’ report to the Enterprise Committee showed that there could be an economic benefit from the additional activity generated by a St Andrew’s Day celebration.
“However, granting an additional holiday could damage both the public and private sectors to the tune of £180m. Our policy of creating a St Andrew’s Day holiday in substitution for an existing one at a different time of the year was the sensible way forward. Now, it looks as if all parties in this debate agree with us. The compromise we first suggested in 2005 brings the best of both worlds without a multi-million pound burden on the Scottish economy. We need to move forward together and create a day of celebration for Scotland, giving our country’s patron saint the significance he deserves.”
