Memorial to Scottish soldiers unveiled Print E-mail
Friday, 24 August 2007

A memorial to the Scottish Soldiers who were involved in the First World War will be unveiled in Flanders by Minister for Europe Linda Fabiani tomorrow.

The memorial, a Celtic cross, will be situated on the site of the Battle of Passchendaele.

Fabiani called the memorial an “important landmark”. She said: "I am deeply honoured to be unveiling the Scottish Memorial.  Scotland's soldiers contributed so much to efforts in the First World War and it is only right that we honour their sacrifice.

"This is an important landmark - there is now finally a memorial which acknowledges the contribution made by Scottish troops.  On behalf of Scotland, I want to thank all those involved in erecting this Celtic Cross.

"It is fitting that the Cross is situated on the Frezenberg where the 9th and 15th Scottish Divisions fought during the Battle of Passchendaele and only a few kilometres away from where the 51st Highland Division were engaged in battle.

"We are very proud of the brave men and women who gave their lives in defence of their country.  I hope that this monument will be visited by many people, young and old, as they come to reflect on the history of Passchendaele and commemorate all the Scottish soldiers who played such an important part in the Great War."

In July First Minister Alex Salmond attended commemorations marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. During his visit to Belgium to meet with EU Commissioners, Salmond attended a ceremony at Tyne Cot Cemetery and laid a wreath at the Menin Gate, Ypres in memory of the large number of Scots who lost their lives during the 1917 battle.

At the time he said: “No family in Scotland was untouched and no community unaffected by the loss of so many young soldiers who died in 1917.  The carnage of Passchendaele is a poignant reminder of why the European institutions were established, to build lasting peace and prosperity in our continent.”
