Climate change action on two fronts Print E-mail
Friday, 17 August 2007

Climate change campaigners are preparing to mount protests near Edinburgh and Glasgow airports using actions similar to the eco-camp currently protesting against the establishment of a third runway at Heathrow.

A Scottish climate change campaigner, Ben Miller of Edinburgh University’s People and Planet group, told Third Force News: “The Scottish airports are something that will be looked at. If we feel the Heathrow experience has been effective I think they will be a target in the not too distant future.”

The Heathrow protest has seen thousands of people camping outside the airport, and is requiring hundreds of police to ensure the security of the airport itself.

Elsewhere, applications have been invited for the Chair and membership of the new UK Committee on Climate Change.

Commenting on the call, Scottish Climate Change Minister Stewart Stevenson said: “The Committee will play a crucial role in advising us of the emerging science of climate change and how best to reduce emissions. We need expert analysis which is clear, transparent and independent of government. The four countries of the UK are jointly seeking candidates for the Committee which will advise us on reaching the UK target of 60 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

“In Scotland, we will consult on proposals for a Scottish Climate Change Bill which will set the ambitious target of an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050.  This will put Scotland at the front of the global fight against climate change. I'd encourage those with the qualifications and experience to come forward and help shape future action on climate change.”
